We are not Bono, or Oprah, or Mother Theresa. We are not famous entertainers or elite athletes. We are Just Us: a local group of friends, families, colleagues and neighbors. We are ordinary people who have heard and learned about extraordinary injustices suffered by our brothers and sisters around the world, at the brutal hands of violent oppressors. And we care.
We could easily become overwhelmed and paralyzed by the scope and depth of the problem: 2 million young girls, as young as 8 years old, forced to “service” 20-30 men per day; 27 million modern-day slaves, owned and beaten by their wealthy masters; 25 thousand children dead, every day, from hunger.
But rather than wrestling with the question of why, we are choosing to ask the question what. WHAT can we do to make a difference? And we have an idea. It’s not all that original…in fact, it’s ancient. The answer is US, together in community, making a difference. No one can do everything needed to solve a problem like this, but we all can do something. And together, we can do more than we’d ever dare to dream: We can change the world.
Just Us, ordinary people for justice, bringing what we have, heeding the call, loving our neighbors, serving, giving, raising awareness, joining those who are effectively winning battles on the front lines (International Justice Mission, www.IJM.org). Just Us, bringing good news to the poor, binding up the broken hearted, setting the captives free.
Just Us,
Running,
Walking,
Responding...
